 Curriculum

General Curriculum

  • The Dance Program curriculum is developmentally based and carries the student from 3-year-old classes where basic rhythmic, self-help and social skills are developed, through  Ballet V in which motivated students who are strong enough are introduced to elementary pointe work.
  • Classes are offered in ballet, pointe prep, and beginning pointe.  In order to maximize curriculum benefits, it is strongly suggested to begin at the start of the school year.

Just for Threes  (Age 3)

  • A gentle introduction to movement and music for the independent 3 year old.  Designed for both boys and girls. Class will include stretches, large motor coordination, music awareness, fun with hand to eye coordination, rhyming songs and much more!
  • Dress: Girls – pink footless tights, pink leotard, bare feet; long hair should be pulled into a pony tail.
  • Dress: Boys – solid white t-shirt, navy blue or black shorts, bare feet.

Pre-Ballet  (Ages 4 – 5)

  • A charming introduction to the beauty of ballet designed for preschoolers ages 4 – 5.  Pre-ballet focuses on limbering stretches, coordinating movement with music and delightful improvisations on ballet themes.
  • Dress: pink footed tights, pink leotard (any skirt-less style), pink ballet shoes.

Kinder Ballet  (Kindergarten Age)

  • Kindergarten girls discover the joys of ballet in this class which emphasizes flexibility, developing musical awareness and the ballet basics.  Improvisations based on the ballet classics stimulate the imagination and provide a look at     ballet’s rich traditions.
  • Dress: pink footed tights, pink leotard (any skirt-less style), pink ballet shoes; hair should be pulled away from face in a pony tail or braid.

Beginning Ballet I (Grades 1 & 2)

  • Grace, strength, precision, balance and beauty are elements that attract us to classical ballet.  This class provides the important foundation for beginning study in the classical ballet technique.  A supportive, nurturing environment allows each child to reach her own potential.
  • Dress: pink footed tights, pink leotard (Bloch style #5402), pink Bloch split-sole ballet shoes; hair is required to be pulled away from face and neck into a pony tail or bun.

Ballet II (Grades 2 - 4)

  • A continuation of the study of classical ballet, this class will  introduce barre and center work to young dancers with some previous ballet experience.  Strength, balance and grace are emphasized through proper placement, musicality, and total body coordination. Individual attention is offered to each student.
  • Dress:  pink footed tights, light blue leotard (Bloch style #5402), pink Bloch split-sole ballet shoes; hair is required to be in a bun.

Ballet III (Grades 3 - 5)

  • Young dancers who have completed the Dance Program’s Ballet II (or its equivalent) will be challenged with new technique both at the barre and in the center.  Students will begin the study of epaulement, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro.  Dancers will be coached on musicality, quality of movement, and the beauty of classical ballet.
  • Dress: pink footed tights, lilac leotard (Bloch style #5402), pink Bloch split-sole ballet shoes; hair is required to be in a proper bun every class.

Ballet IV (Grades 4 - 6)

  • Dancers who have completed the Dance Program’s Ballet III, (or a minimum of three years of classical ballet study) will progress further in their training through increasingly complex barre and center work.  Students will build on their study of epaulement, adagio, and allegro begun in Ballet III, as well as pirouettes en dehors and en dedans.  Establishing good work habits, mastering the French terminology, and integrating expression and musicality into our movement are some of the goals of this important year of training.
  • Dress: pink footed tights, seafoam leotard (Mirella style #201-L), pink Bloch split-sole ballet shoes; hair is  required to be in a proper bun for every class.

Ballet V and Pointe Prep (Grades 5 & 6)

  • This class continues to develop the motivated young dancer who has had several years of classical ballet training.  Barre and center exercises increase both in length and complexity and are designed to familiarize the student with the broad spectrum of classical technique.  A challenging but exciting part of each class is Pointe Prep; the strengthening exercise which readies the dancer for pointe work.  Dancers already on pointe will progress to more complex combinations.
  • Dress:  pink footed tights, black leotard (Mirella #211C) and black wrap skirt for pointe/pointe prep  (mirella #S12).  Pink Bloch split-soled ballet shoes; hair is  required to be in a proper bun for every class.  Pointe shoes only upon recommendation of instructor.

Special Curriculum Note for Ballet V

  • Ballet V is a two year course for 5th and 6th graders.
  • At this stage of a young dancer’s development Miss Camille recommends those who are interested to take an additional class in order to develop the requisite strength to go on pointe.
  • No child will be put on pointe before she is ready. Children finishing Ballet IV will receive detailed information at the end of that year.
  • Please remember that it is possible to graduate from the Dance Program, and to be honored in the Annual Dance Performance, without taking additional classes.

Graduates of the Dance Program

For some graduates, this will mark the end of their dance lessons; they graduate with an impressive measure of accomplishment and will be future advocates of the arts.  For others, it means a new level of commitment to ballet, perhaps through the experiences of one of our area’s pre-professional companies.  Several graduates of Miss Camille's Dance Program are currently proudly represented in Dayton Ballet II Jr. and Sr. Companies, and Gem City Ballet.
